Finally!!

Well, we have a new webpage up and running. Still working out a few spots, but it’s ready. Check it out at http://www.shawfamilyfarm.com/

Things are picking up, here at the farm. We are doing most of the big jobs on the weekends when the boys are home from school. Two weeks ago, we moved five tons (yep, you read that right!) of feed (in 50 lb bags) into the barn loft. What this looks like is someone puts a fifty pound bag of feed on your shoulder and you climb a ladder into the loft where another person is waiting to take if from you and stack it up there. We, certainly, got our exercise that day! Also, this means we have lots of feed, if anyone would like to purchase some of what we bought. Contact me at 530-582-5293.

This past weekend, we got into the barn and got part of the “deep” bedding from winter out. It is a huge job, as it gets very compacted, but we will have such nice compost come fall. We are moving it to another area where we can water and “turn” it with our bobcat during the summer.

If you haven’t heard, our eggs are now for sale at New Moon Natural Foods in Truckee. I know those of you lucky enough to have been on our delivery schedule this past winter are missing the weekly eggs and/or bread, but this is much more sustainable for us. Bread, unfortunately, is no longer available. Nothing baked in a home kitchen, in the State of California, can be sold. I know, contact your governmental representative!

None of our bees made it through the winter, but we have replenished our hives with four healthy colonies, and are hoping for more success this year. We have relocated our bee yard and put up a three sided straw bale wind break for them, along with reinstalling our electric fence to keep the bears out.

We have some new additions to the farm. We purchased two little pigs, born on Valentine’s Day, and they have been making the farm their home for the last couple of months. They are fun to watch interact with our dogs and they grow soooo fast. They will both be butchered this fall and fill our freezer.

In addition, we have two new pups. These are both livestock protection breeds, and we are looking forward to Bell and Beau protecting our farm from bears, coyotes and whatever else might wander this way. You can see them on our new webpage on “The Farm” page.

We have garlic and rhubarb coming up outside and have been eating lots of salad and strawberries out of the greenhouse this spring. I can’t over-emphasize how great a greenhouse is in this climate. We were eating out of it all winter! It’s great to snowshoe out there, open the door and find green! Amazing.

Hope you’re all well.
